Are you interested in expanding your knowledge of autism? Look no further than Autism Western Cape’s online training course.

 

Our course is a compilation of 16 modules, offering a comprehensive understanding of the broad spectrum of autism.

 

What’s more, our course is accredited by HPCSA, earning you 40 Clinical CPD points or 15 SACE CPD points.

 

This is the ideal opportunity for teachers and health care workers to obtain the needed CPD points.  We are currently busy acquiring accreditation from SACSSP.

 

The course is designed to be self-paced, allowing you to complete it at your convenience. With only 3.5 hours required to complete the course, you can fit it into your busy schedule.

 

Once you have paid the course fee of R2699, excluding VAT and registered, you will have access to the platform for one month.

Autism Western Cape Training Modules

Disability Awareness and Sensitisation: This module is creating awareness about disabilities and especially hidden disabilities like autism, ADHD, intellectual disabilities and others. We aim to equip our trainees with the knowledge on how to support individuals with specific disabilities.

 

Introduction to Autism: Overview of autism.

 

Autism and Social Skill Development: Our autistic individuals struggle with social interaction and high levels of anxiety because they don’t have the necessary social skills to engage with others.

 

Autism and the Sensory System: 90% of people on the spectrum experience sensory sensitivities.  In this module, we discuss all 8 senses, how sensitivities present themselves, what stimming is and how a teacher or carer can make the world more sensory-friendly for our learners.

 

Language and Communication: Everyone has the right to be heard.  This module focuses on communication difficulties in our autism community. We look at non-speaking non-verbal autistic as well as our verbal autists who lack the ability to understand verbal and non-verbal cues. We also discuss alternative communication systems.

 

Understanding Behaviour: All behaviour is communication.  In this module, we aim to explain why certain behaviours in our autistic learners present itself.

 

Managing Behaviour: Strategies to manage the behaviour.

 

Managing Meltdowns: How to understand and manage meltdowns.

 

Inclusive Solutions: Inclusive education is an aim of our government. With this module we focus on creating an inclusive classroom.

 

Autism and Toilet Training: Sensory, Communicative and behaviour make toilet training for autistic individuals challenging.

 

Autism and Bullying:  Our Autistic individuals are being bullied at school and in the workplace. With this module, we aim to equip carers and teachers in bullying management.

 

Autism in Puberty: All changes are challenging for autistic individuals, and puberty is a big change in their bodies and emotions.

 

Autistic adults: Learn about adults on the spectrum.

 

Transitioning from School to Workplace: This is a big transition in anyone anyone’s life. We discuss how to prepare someone for the open labour market and and ask for reasonable accommodations from companies.

 

Calming techniques: How to calm an autistic individual after a meltdown or outburst, and teaching them how to calm themselves.

 

Person-Centred Approach:  How to take co-ordinated and personalised effort to meet the needs of the autistic individual.
